C6 Corvette History

The C6 Corvette is the sixth generation Vette and began its production in 2005. One of the more obvious cosmetic deviations for the C6 from the previous generations was the fact that the headlights were clearly visible though molded and sculpted into the front fenders. Gone were the pop up style headlights that graced the front fascia of the Corvette for the previous 40 plus years.

From a performance standpoint the first C6’s rolled out with an enhanced suspension and Chevy’s new 6.0 Liter engine. The performance of the C6 rivals any of the super luxury cars from Germany or Italy at a fraction of the price. The 2005 C6 Corvette rushes from zero to 60 mph in an adrenaline-pumping 4.2 seconds continuing on to a top speed of 186 mph. Changes were made to the interior and passenger compartment as well, adding more space, within a slightly shortened body.

In 2006 Chevy amped it up even further by introducing a 7.0L engine, the Z06. At roughly 427 cu. in. the 7.0L engine was a distant cousin to the 427’s powering the second generation Corvettes in the mid 60’s. Paddle shifting was also available with the Z06’s 6 –speed automatic transmission.

In 2009 Chevy introduced the ZR1 model C6 capable of greater than 600 horsepower and top speeds over 200 mph.

2005 Corvette Specifications

The 2005 Corvette came with a new interior and new exterior, along with a new chassis. Not seen since 1962, the 2005 Corvette had exposed headlights. The car was shorter, the wheelbase was bigger, and new options including satellite radio, DVD-based navigation, side air-bags and heated seats were available. Under the hood the LS2 400hp engine was now standard.

2006 Corvette Specifications

The 2006 Corvette saw the return of the Z06 engine. Now the power convertible top was an option, and the Z06 body came with a cold-air scoop and a larger grill. This was the lightest of all Corvettes, as the Z06 frame was made of aluminum. For this year the Z06 was the official pace car for the 2006 Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500.

2007 Corvette Specifications

The power top on the Corvette was now standard. The Ron Fellows ALMS (American LeMans Series) and an Indianapolis 500 convertible pace car replica was available. Options included the Arctic White paint with “CORVETTE” scripted on the windshield in Arctic White as well. It also had Monterey Red Grand Sport style fender stripes, Ebony/Red interior, full-width rear spoiler, and a special dash pod trim pattern and special console. The Red centre console lid had C6 logo embroidery which was signed and numbered by Ron Fellows. 500 of the Indianapolis 500 convertible Corvettes were produced. As for the Ron Fellows AMS Corvette, it was the first signed limited edition in Corvette history and 399 were produced.

The 2008 Corvette had a great look. Inside was a new console trim plate, new metal door sill plates and brushed aluminum shifter. The base engine for the 2008 Vette was the LS3 with 430 horsepower. This engine would be the standard in the 2009 Corvette as well. The ZHZ special edition was introduced. It was a C6 coupe with a LS3 engine, vacuum actuated valve exhaust, F55 suspension and special 7-spoke chrome wheels. The ZHZ was produced for The Hertz Corporation’s “Fun Collection” in targa versions. All cars were yellow with a thick black stripe down the center of the hood.

2009 Corvette Specifications

The 2009 Chevy Corvette was incredible and had the LS3 engine seen in the 2008 Corvette. The Z06 was available with a 7L LS7 V-8 engine that kicked out 505 horsepower. The ZR1 took it up a notch with a 6.2L 638 horsepower LS9 engine as an option. The 2009 ZR1 Corvette started at $105,670. The Corvette GT1 Champion Edition option package was introduced this year.

2010 Corvette Specifications

The 2010 Corvette Grand Sport was added to the Chevy Corvette lineup, and included special suspension tuning, brakes and transmission gearing, and it could be ordered with the 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim packages. This car was available as a convertible or coupe and all came with a 6.2L V-8 engine that kicked out 430 horsepower.

2011 Corvette Specifications

The 2011 Corvette lineup now include the Ultimate Performance package for the Z06, which included the ZR1’s carbon-ceramic brakes, adaptive dampers, tires and wheels. The Z06 Carbon Editions was produced. It had parts from the ZR1, including the active suspension, carbon ceramic brakes and other carbon fiber pieces.

2012 Corvette Specifications

While the 2012 Corvette saw a new seat design and new steering wheel, the 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette was the big story for 2013. It had Carbon Flash Metallic paint, satin-black wheels, satin-black graphics, a special interior trim and the new Magnetic Selective Ride Control. Both the Grand Sport and the base 2012 Corvettes had the 6.2L 430 horsepower LS3 V-8 engines.
