The hand laminating process begins with three mils of gel coat sprayed into a female mold to create a smooth outer surface. Next, resin is painted by hand onto the gel coat followed by the "layering in" of three layers of mat and resin. The mat and resin are carefully rolled out with a hand roller to eliminate air bubbles and to assure uniformity. This process allows the creation of unique parts like the one piece front end which is easier to install than the multi-piece units from the factory. This time honored system combined with the use of only automotive grade resins and gel coat produces a beautifully smooth, strong and easy to sand part.
Eckler's Corvette Press molded parts are made with a huge hydraulic press which holds large male and female steel tools (known as the molds). Fiberglass mat and resin is placed between the tools and is pressed together under extremely high pressure and heat. This process allows the production of high volumes of parts that are perfectly uniform in thickness and that are smooth on both sides. Press molded parts do not have a gel coat finish though. Parts can also be manufactured using low pressure press molding. This method takes a precisely cut fiberglass mat and places it into a two-piece closed mold. Resin is injected into the mold and allowed to cure. This method also produces a smooth surface on both sides of the part.
